About Dr. Ben R. Brown Jr.
Dr. Ben R. Brown Jr. is the founder of BOSN Marine Consulting LLC and a maritime safety and marine casualty expert witness based in New Orleans. A retired U.S. Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer (BOSN2), he brings more than 40 years of military and civilian experience in vessel operations, marine casualties, personal injury, incident investigation, and safety management systems.
Since 2022, he has been retained in 16 expert-witness and consulting matters. His industry experience includes senior HSE roles with Chevron and BHP Billiton and more than 15 years as an independent HSE consultant supporting major energy companies, including ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP, and BHP Billiton, in high-hazard offshore and geophysical operations worldwide.
He holds a Doctor of Occupational Safety and Health and an M.S. in Occupational Safety & Health / Environmental Management. His doctoral research examined the relationship between servant leadership and safety leadership in the oil and gas industry. Credentials include Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Safety Management Professional (SMP), and the NEBOSH International General Certificate.
His operational background includes command of a U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue Station, qualification as Surfman #286, and a former 1,600-ton Master Upon Oceans credential. His work combines front-line operational experience, corporate HSE leadership, and evidence-based safety research.
